Why is my engine making a tapping sound?
This is an indication that vital engine components are not getting adequate lubrication. Your engine may be low on oil or there could be a problem inside the engine causing the low oil pressure. Ticking, tapping, or clicking sounds can also be symptoms of worn valve train components such as lifters or cam followers.
Will a thicker oil stop engine knocking?
Thicker oil won’t stop engine knock, but it can temporarily alleviate the symptoms. Getting rid of knock requires a proper tune. You may experience rod knock or piston slap, which can get picked up by the knock sensor but thicker oil would only put a bandage on serious problems.
Can noisy tappets damage an engine?
Not only can this degradation lead to an annoying tapping noise but it can also decrease engine efficiency, and therefore power. A worn down camshaft or tappet will result in a valve not opening to its pre-set lift distance, restricting the air/fuel mixture that’s trying to rush into the cylinders.
